David Yocum
My name is David Yocum and I do my wood working under Yarcadian Wood Works. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and joined the US Army at the age of 17 in 1979 (on my mother’s birthday). I moved to Zanesville around 1996 and I’ve been working with wood since 2005. I became disabled with lymphoedema in both legs during that year and my wife thought I needed to find something to occupy my time. I have yet to find an interest in just one area of wood working. There are just so many things you can create out of wood or on wood.
I have created keepsake boxes, blanket chests, toy boxes, potato bins, scroll art, intarsia, rustic bowls, and have recently gained an interest in pyrography (wood burning). Part of my enjoyment with my choice of medium is being able to work with a variety of tools to achieve my goal.
Another recent interest is creating scroll portraits from photos. This is where I take a picture of someone and create a stencil/pattern of them and then cut that out of a piece of wood. I have incorporated one of these onto a box I had made for my mother’s 75th birthday in 2008.
My background prior to this was developing MS Access databases and some web design work. I have no formal training in working with wood. I have however taken a class on how to use one of my tools properly and also a four hour class in wood burning…which is why I’m interested in it now.
